For all we know, this could have been the one moment that this Doctor Strange saw. There’s no guarantee that this universe’s heroes could have put everything back to normal. The Illuminati may not have liked how it happened, but the alternative could have been worse. Most of them are gods, celestials, and the Hulk. In Marvel Comics, there’s only a handful of people in his league. Strange understood and was willing to take his penance. In the end, the Illuminati couldn’t allow their teammate to continue using dark magic. Stephen Strange was warned about using the Darkhold in this universe but he didn’t listen. Even though Strange saved the universe, the rest of the Illuminati didn’t like how he did. The problem was it took him using the power of the Darkhold – a book full of evil spells – to make it happen. The one that used to be part of the Illuminati found a way to kill Thanos. Before he snapped his fingers, however, Doctor Strange meditated and entered a trance, looking through 14 million possible outcomes in the battle against the Mad Titan. Thanos completed his goal of erasing half of life in their reality. Not only did it break a bunch of records, it managed to have an ending that no one saw coming.
